Varsha Ritu (Rainy Season)
Varsha ritu (Rainy season) represents the beginning of Dakshinayana kala/visargakala when sun moving towards southern direction. Human body has minimal strength at this time. Aggravation of vata and accumulation of pitta in rainy season leads to weak digestive power (Agni). This provides favourable internal environment to manifest diseases. As adaptations to external changes is the key for survival, the knowledge of Ritucarya is thus important. To enhance digestive power and pacify vitiated doshas, karkidaka cikitsa is administered as a seasonal health practice. Varsha Ritu Charya
- Use foods having sour, salty and unctuous properties.
- Include cereals – old barley, rice, wheat etc in diet
- Meat soup, yusha
- Take medicated boiled water
- Avoid intake of river water, excessive liquids etc.
- Avoid heavy foods, which are hard to digest
- Take bath in hot water
- Warm oil massage before bath
- Avoid day sleep, excessive exercise, exposure to cold wind

Karkidaka Kanji (Oushadha Kanji)

Oushadha kanji is a special recipe traditionally used by Keralites during karkidaka month to maintain digestive fire and to strengthen body. It contains vatasamana and deepaniya drugs. Hence it provides the simplest way for a complete rejuvenating effect and to prevent common ailments of rainy season. This porridge is usually taken once in a day, preferably after an oil massage and bath in warm water. Conventionally, it is taken for the whole month as it given long lasting benefits to people of all age groups.
