Ayurveda is the traditional system of medicine with a holistic approach to ensure the complete wellbeing in physical, mental and spiritual dimensions.  Purpose of Ayurveda is to pacify diseases in unhealthy as well as to improve the wellness of healthy persons.  Ayurvedic ancient texts describe the proper way of healthy living in terms of daily regimen (Dinacarya) and seasonal regimen (Ritucarya).

Human body is composed of  Tridoshas (Vata Pitta, Kapha).  Imbalance in their equilibrium is the root cause of any ailments.  These variations occur in according to the external environment conditions.  Ayurveda indicates the diet, activities and medications to be followed in every season to attain state of wellness.

Karkidaka chikitsa is Kerala’s unique traditional healing and rejuvenation package in Kerala.  It is the practical version of varsha ritucarya as mentioned in samhithas.  This time period is considered as the most challenging month of year in terms of spiritual, mental and physical health.  Statistically, it is a time when incidence of autoimmune disorders, infections, communicable diseases occur at its peak.

Varsha Ritu (Rainy Season)

Varsha ritu (Rainy season) represents the beginning of Dakshinayana kala/visargakala when sun moving towards southern direction.  Human body has minimal strength at this time.  Aggravation of vata and accumulation of pitta in rainy season leads to weak digestive power (Agni).  This provides favourable internal environment to manifest diseases.  As adaptations to external changes is the key for survival, the knowledge of Ritucarya is thus important.  To enhance digestive power and pacify vitiated doshas, karkidaka cikitsa is administered as a seasonal health practice.  Personal care and healthy lifestyle followed in this season gives long lasting wellness.
